What Is a CPRI Cable in Telecom Networks?

A CPRI cable is a fiber optic cable assembly used to connect the Baseband Unit (BBU) and Remote Radio Unit (RRU/RRH) in mobile network fronthaul systems.Unlike regular indoor fiber patch cords, CPRI cables are designed for telecom tower and FTTA (Fiber-to-the-Antenna) deployments.Let's explore CPRI-related technical knowledge with Skyward Telecom.

Typical Features

• Duplex fiber connectivity
• Single-mode or multimode fiber
• Telecom-grade connectors
• Outdoor ruggedized construction
• Waterproof and UV-resistant options for tower installations

Single-Mode vs Multimode

The choice between single-mode fiber and multi-mode fiber depends primarily on transmission distance and application requirements. Single-mode fiber (SMF) is typically the preferred choice for long-distance outdoor telecommunications deployments due to its ability to support greater transmission distances; it is widely used in FTTA, CPRI, data transmission, and carrier networks. Multi-mode fiber (MMF), on the other hand, is predominantly used for short-range connections in indoor environments, such as data centers, enterprise networks, equipment rooms, and laboratories.

CPRI vs eCPRI

Traditional CPRI (Common Public Radio Interface) employs a dedicated TDM-based (Time Division Multiplexing) transmission architecture to transport digitized wireless signals between the BBU (Baseband Unit) and the RRU (Remote Radio Unit); while this approach offers predictable, low-latency communication, it imposes relatively high bandwidth requirements. In contrast, eCPRI (enhanced CPRI) utilizes Ethernet-based transmission technology to support a more flexible, packet-based fronthaul network, thereby better accommodating modern 4G/5G network architectures.

Common Applications

Mobile Base Station Fronthaul

Widely used for mobile base station fronthaul connections, establishing reliable communication links between BBU/RAN equipment and remote radio units (RRU/RRH) to ensure efficient signal transmission.

FTTA Deployment

Specifically designed for "Fiber-to-the-Antenna" (FTTA) applications, these cables support fiber-optic connections between base station equipment and antennas. Their rugged, weather-resistant design enables them to withstand harsh outdoor telecommunications environments.

4G and 5G Wireless Networks:

Fiber-optic connectivity plays a critical role in 4G LTE and 5G wireless networks, enabling high-bandwidth, low-latency communication between wireless devices and network infrastructure.
