The Alcatel Lucent SM ( Synchronous Multiplexer) is an add drop SDH mux ( ADM) and small cross-connect in one.  It is used for metro and regional core transport in the fixed line network and backhauling in the 3G network as it also supports ATM for UMTS. It was known as an MSPP ( multi-service provisioning platform) since it supports both SDH/ TDM and Ethernet services. The later generation R5 variant provides 10GE Ethernet and STM-64.
