Nokia 7750 SR Series Hardware Technical Reference — Chassis, Modules and Part-Number Compatibility
Abstract
This document provides consolidated hardware specifications, module part-numbers (PN), forwarding silicon information and critical cross-platform compatibility guidance for the Nokia 7750 SR routing family, covering SR-a, SR-e, legacy 7750 SR (SR-7, SR-12, SR-12e) and SR-s product lines. Material is intended as a practical technical reference for telecom operator procurement teams, system integrators, network hardware resellers and field engineers. All module part-numbers are presented in plain text for searchability and cross-verification against physical hardware labels.
Critical preliminary warning: The legacy enhanced chassis 7750 SR-12e is NOT a member of the SR-e series (SR-1e / SR-2e / SR-3e). Despite the common “-e” suffix, hardware form-factors are completely incompatible and modules cannot be intermixed.
1. 7750 SR-a Series — Compact Shallow-Depth Platform, FP3 Silicon
The 7750 SR-a family consists of shallow-depth chassis optimized for 300 mm ETSI cabinets, powered by FP3 forwarding silicon. Supported modules are exclusively IOM-a and MDA-a / MDA-a-XP. SR-a hardware cannot accept IOM / MDA modules from SR-e, legacy SR-12e or SR-s platforms. Control processors, power supplies and fan trays are chassis-specific and non-interchangeable between SR-a4 and SR-a8. SR-OS runs PAYG port licensing bound to the chassis unit, not to individual plug-in modules.

2. 7750 SR-e Series — Mid-Size Modular Platform, FP3 Silicon
The 7750 SR-e platform includes SR-1e, SR-2e and SR-3e chassis based on FP3 forwarding silicon. Hardware consists of IOM-e carrier mother-boards paired with MDA-e / MDA-e-XP daughter-cards. IOM-e and MDA-e modules are physically incompatible with SR-a, legacy SR-7 / SR-12 / SR-12e and SR-s platforms. SR-OS licensing for L2 / L3 service capabilities is bound to each individual IOM-e module rather than the chassis.
| Chassis Model | Maximum IOM-e Quantity | Maximum System Throughput FD | Primary Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7750 SR-1e | 1 | Up to 200G FD | Small-site aggregation, IPsec gateway |
| 7750 SR-2e | 2 | Up to 400G FD | Mid-tier aggregation, small-scale BNG |
| 7750 SR-3e | 3 | Up to 600G FD | Top-of-range SR-e, medium-scale BNG, multi-user IPsec |
All IOM-e physical hardware is identical across SR-1e / SR-2e / SR-3e; modules may be freely moved between chassis subject to slot count limits. Each IOM-e provides up to 200 Gb/s FD connectivity and supports up to four MDA-e and MS-ISA2 modules. Hardware constraint: maximum two MDA-e-XP high‑speed daughter‑cards per IOM‑e; remaining two slots accept only standard MDA‑e.
| Part-Number | Module Designation | Licence Profile |
|---|---|---|
| 3HE10311AA | IOM-7750-SR-e-L3HQ | L3HQ: Full L3 routing, advanced QoS queues, complete VPRN / EVPN-L3 feature support |
| 3HE10311CA | IOM-7750-SR-e-L3BQ | L3BQ: Base L3 functionality, reduced QoS queue capacity for general aggregation |
| 3HE10311BA | IOM-7750-SR-e-L2HQ | L2HQ: Layer‑2‑only operation; no L3 VPN capability |
3. Legacy 7750 SR Platform — SR‑1, SR‑7, SR‑12, SR‑12e (FP3 / FP4 Silicon)
The original legacy 7750 SR family includes SR‑1, SR‑7 and SR‑12 chassis. SR‑12e is not a new physical chassis shell: it represents an upgraded operational state of existing SR‑12 hardware by replacing SFM switch‑fabric boards and installing CPM5 controller sub‑modules. SR‑7 can also be upgraded to SR‑7e mode. SR‑1 is a fixed‑configuration compact unit with integrated controller hardware and cannot be upgraded to “e” mode. Legacy IOM, IMM and MDA hardware is physically incompatible with SR‑a, SR‑e and SR‑s platforms.
3.1 CPM Controller Sub‑modules & SF/CPM Switch‑Fabric Boards
- CPM4: Not a separate removable sub‑module. Controller logic is integrated onto SFM4‑7 and SFM4‑12 combined SF/CPM boards. Supports FP3 modules only; FP4 line‑cards are not recognised.
- CPM5 PN: 3HE08423AA: Hot‑pluggable controller sub‑module for SR‑7e / SR‑12e; supports both FP3 and FP4 forwarding modules and modern SR‑OS releases.
Switch‑Fabric Module selection rules: All SFM boards within one chassis must be identical generation. Mixing SFM4‑12 and SFM4‑12e in a single SR‑12 chassis is unsupported.
3.2 SFM Switch‑Fabric Boards
- SR‑7 native: SFM4‑7 (integrated CPM4)
- SR‑7 upgrade to SR‑7e: SFM5‑7 (accepts CPM5 sub‑module)
- SR‑12 native: SFM4‑12 PN 3HE05948AA (integrated CPM4, FP4‑incapable)
- SR‑12 upgrade option‑1: SFM4‑12e, supports CPM5 for SR‑12e operation
- SR‑12 upgrade option‑2: SFM5‑12e PN 3HE08421AA high‑performance fabric for SR‑12e
- Mini‑SFM5‑12e PN 3HE08422AA: reduced‑capacity variant of SFM5‑12e
3.3 Legacy IOM / IMM Line‑Cards
Definition: IOM = MDA carrier mother‑board without native front‑panel ports. IMM = fixed‑port integrated media module.

| Part‑Number | Module Designation | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| 3HE08753AA / 3HE08753CA | IOM5‑e | FP4 MDA‑carrier; configurable for 1‑PAC or 2‑PAC slot operation. “IOM‑PAC‑FP4” refers to configuration mode, not physical silkscreen name on hardware. |
| — | IMM9‑100GB‑QSFP28 | FP4 fixed‑port IMM, 9 ×100G QSFP28 |
| — | IMM‑92S | Dedicated module for 7750 SR‑1‑92S platform (2.8T‑12.8T system capacity). Note: SR‑1‑92S is a standalone fixed‑configuration chassis; this module cannot be inserted into SR‑7 / SR‑12e IOM slots. |
| Chassis Model | Positioning | Upgrade Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 7750 SR‑1 | Small fixed‑port unit for edge access | Cannot be upgraded to e‑mode |

| 7750 SR‑12 | Large 12‑slot chassis shipped with SFM4‑12 | Upgrade to SR‑12e: replace full SFM set with e‑generation SFM and fit CPM5; mechanical enclosure remains identical. |
| 7750 SR‑12e | Upgraded operational state of SR‑12 chassis | Requires SFM4‑12e / SFM5‑12e fabric + CPM5 controller; original SR‑12 housing reused. |
4. 7750 SR‑s Series — Next‑Generation High‑Density Platform, FP4 / FP5 Silicon
The 7750 SR‑s family represents Nokia’s latest high‑capacity routing hardware, built upon FP4 and FP5 forwarding silicon. SR‑OS software CLI maintains backward‑compatibility, but mechanical form‑factors are fully redesigned. IOM‑s, MDA‑s, XMA‑s modules are completely non‑interchangeable with SR‑a, SR‑e and legacy SR‑12e hardware. SR‑7s and SR‑14s support mixed deployment of FP4 and FP5 IOM‑s cards within a single chassis.
| Chassis Model | Silicon Generation | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 7750 SR‑1s | FP4 | Compact 2U high‑density fixed / limited‑expansion chassis |
| 7750 SR‑2s | FP4 | 2‑slot modular mid‑range router |
| 7750 SR‑1se / SR‑2se | FP5 | FP5 enhanced variants of SR‑1s / SR‑2s; higher per‑slot forwarding performance, “se” suffix denotes FP5 enhanced hardware |
| 7750 SR‑7s | FP4 / FP5 mixed capable | 7‑slot large modular core chassis for operator backbone |
| 7750 SR‑14s | FP4 / FP5 mixed capable | Largest SR‑s chassis, up to 216 Tb/s FD system capacity (Full Duplex, non‑redundant fabric mode) |
Module naming convention for SR‑s hardware:
- IOM‑s / IOM2‑se: Main carrier mother‑boards
- MDA‑s / MDA2‑se / XMA‑s / XMA2‑s: Port daughter‑adapters, supporting up to 800GE QSFP‑DD including DCO coherent optical interfaces.
Typical use‑cases for SR‑s: IP core backbone peering, large‑scale BNG subscriber gateways, line‑rate hardware‑accelerated DDoS mitigation, high‑density 100G‑400G‑800G data‑center gateway deployment, ANYsec and MACsec encrypted services.
